Perito Moreno Glacier
Part of Glacier National Park and born of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.
It is shared by Argentina and Chile .
It owes its name to Francisco Moreno (1852-1919), explorer of southern Argentina, creator of the Argentina scientific society, and national parks.
The Perito Moreno glacier has a length of 30 km., a front of 5 km. and a height of 70 meters.
It is the only glacier not retreating. The front of the glacier when it reaches the coast shuts off the rich waters of the arm and is a reservoir where the water level difference exceeds 20 meters. By water pressure, the ice begins to erode until it reaches the expected breakdown. The last was in March 2004.
The Perito Moreno is the only progress that far, and it gets to separate the rich waters of the arm with the Argentine Lake. In his breaks icebergs break off large sizes.
