Sarmiento

It is considered the population of southern irrigated Argentina because of its proximity to Lake Musters and Lake Colhué Huapi. Founded in 1897, is dedicated to agriculture and is the gateway to the petrified forests.
Forests are situated 38 km. southwest of Sarmiento , these are large petrified logs scattered on the ground.
The logs do not come from fallen trees, but were brought by the river for 65 million years from the mountainous regions.

Desiderio Torres Museum: located in the old railway station, stone pieces and arrows. This museum has several rooms: a paleontological, archaeological, settlers and pottery. A real time travel.

Excursions from Sarmiento:
José Ormaechea Petrified Forest: only 38 km. south of the town of Sarmiento, and a gravel road, we arrive at this nature reserve. The forest has an age of about 65 million years. Trees petrified witnesses of prehistory, these logs are part of a process performed for millions of years on the wood. The Andes, rises and thus prevents the passage of moisture from the Pacific, producing eruptions whose lava and ash sediments spread, ushering in the slow process of transformation of these logs in stone.
The arid landscape of the steppe, and its feature alone makes it difficult to imagine that in this natural area was a forest.
